Sperry Top-Sider, the title sponsor of the Sperry Top-Sider NOOD Regattas, answered the call in 2013. We heard from you that you wanted to see video of the day’s racing after each day of the event. So Sperry was generous enough to make that happen. As a result, saved for posterity are the finer moments of each of our six events. Now you can either relive those happy times, watch your competition steal your thunder, or just see what you missed! If you are in the latter group – don’t let it happen again! “When_ Sailing World_ and the IBM Corporation agreed to extend their National Offshore One-Design series from four regattas to six for 1993, the search focused quickly on two metropolitan areas with strong one-design activitiy – Los Angeles and Detroit. Offering to host the events were the long-established Bayview Yacht Club on the Detroit River and the newly sited Los Angeles Yacht Club in San Pedro.

On paper, the newest “NOOD” regattas looked capable of drawing big fleets to their inaugurals, despite dramatically different sailing venues.”

How Napoleon Caused the Detroit NOOD https://www.sailingworld.com/regatta-series/how-napoleon-caused-the-detroit-nood/ Mon, 06 Jun 2011 23:07:09 +0000 https://www.sailingworld.com/?p=67148 According to Leo Tolstoy, and me, the French leader has a lot to do with one-design sailing on Lake St. Clair.

I’m just returning from the 2011 Sperry Top-Sider Detroit NOOD. It’s been a long weekend, but I’m wide awake. So I’m doing what I often do when I’m ready to fall asleep—reading “War and Peace.”

At the very beginning of Part 2, somewhere around page 714, depending which edition you’re reading, Tolstoy goes into historian-philosopher mode, talking about the infinite number of causes, small and large, behind the Napoleonic Wars, and how removing any one cause would’ve prevented the war from occurring the way it did, if the war would’ve happened at all.

All of history is this way, says Tolstoy, so you can look at any one event as being caused, or at least connected, to anything that came before it. My synopsis, I’m sure, is a complete bastardization of Count Leo’s words, and it’s beginning to sound like the premise of that crappy Ashton Kutcher movie, “The Butterfly Effect.” Regardless, Tolstoy got me thinking—you know how your mind races when you’re trying to fall asleep—Did Napoleon somehow cause the 2011 Sperry Top-Sider Detroit NOOD?

**_Despite the reference to “War and Piece,” most of my knowledge of Napoleon comes from the movie “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure” (above).
_

Now I’m positive I’ve adulterated Tolstoy’s point. Still, it’s not too hard to trace how Napoleon did, in his own small way, cause the Detroit NOOD. Hear me out. Napoleon invaded Russia in 1812. We didn’t cover this in high-school history, but I’m guessing that Napoleon storming around the Continent had something to do with England’s half-ass commitment to the War of 1812, which—I do know this—it lost.

The culminating events of the War of 1812 took place in the Detroit area. In fact, just across the Detroit River from Bayview YC is the town of Tecumseh, Ontario, named for the Shawnee leader who died nearby fighting alongside meager British forces against the Americans. Tecumseh’s defeat is a big reason why the city of Detroit is presently part of the United States, not Canada, and, jumping forward to last Saturday night, a slightly smaller reason why Detroit NOOD principal race officer Peter Reggio, who was working double-duty as regatta tent cash box attendant, was in a position to accept both Canadian and U.S. currency in exchange for purple party tickets.

So did Napoleon cause the Detroit NOOD? No, not really. But you can’t say he’s not connected to it. And I bet Napoleon would make one heck of a Melges 24 skipper.

It’s time for bed, isn’t it?

The crew of the Beneteau 36.7 Grizzly: mastman Colin Bayer, skipper Chuck Bayer, tactician/ main trimmer Carl Kuspa, floater Joe “Popeye” Henderson, bowman Kevin Thomas, trimmer Bob DeClerk, pitman John Maxwell.

Chuck Bayer and the crew of Grizzly won the first five races en route to a runaway victory in the 11-boat Beneteau 36.7 division, earning first-place overall at the 2011 Sperry Top-Sider Detroit NOOD. The overall title is a long time coming for Bayer, a die-hard NOOD racer who has won his division several times in the past, but never received the invite to compete in the Sperry Top-Sider NOOD Champship, which takes place each November in the British Virgin Islands, courtesy of Sunsail.

Shortly after the awards, I dragged the winning team out of the tent and borrowed them for a few questions while they waiting for the real prize—a pitcher of Hummer cocktails from famed Bayview YC bartender Jerome Adams. Besides Bayer, who owns and drives the boat, the Grizzy team includes tactician/ main trimmer Carl Kuspa, trimmer Bob DeClerk, bowman Kevin Thomas, mastman Colin Bayer (Chuck’s son), pitman John Maxwell, and floater Joe “Popeye” Henderson.

**So you finally won the big prize. Feeling pretty good?
**Chuck Bayer: I’m elated. We’ve come so close, but [the Beneteau 36.7] has never been picked as being the best fleet. We won three San Diego NOODs and four Annapolis NOODs, and we’ve won here three or four times. But it’s been a long drought where we haven’t been picked. So we’re so happy to be picked…because we’re all going, and we’re going to win down there! We’re looking forward to the Caribbean, because we’re competitive, but we do this as an avocation, and it’s fun for us. The whole point for us is having fun.

Joe “Popeye” Henderson: The most important thing is we want to have fun. And losing is not fun! [Laughter all around]

CB: Everybody on this crew has sailed with me at least two or three NOODs, if not five or six, or 15.

Bob DeClerk: I sailed with Chuck 48 years ago as a junior sailor, and I’ve done every NOOD since 2004.

CB: And we do three or four NOODs a year!

**How did you go about winning the first five races?
**Carl Kuspa: It wasn’t our starts!

CB: Nothing about the starts went well.

CK: We just had flat-out boatspeed. Our starts sucked, thanks to me, but we were flat-out fast, and Chuck finally listened to us!

To have a run like that, you’ve got to have a pretty good idea about what’s going on with the breeze, don’t you?
CK: We went the way we wanted to go all but one leg in those first five races. We got lucky the first beat of the first race, had a bad start and got shot to the right, and that paid out for us. But outside that, we did what we wanted.

CB: We were first to every mark the first day.

CK: The second day we were OCS, but we were still first to the mark. Then, when they took tactics away from me, we finally had someone beat us around the mark, you [fair-weather friends]!

CB: And that’s a quote!

John Maxwell [Addressing Bayer and Kuspa]: You guys can bitch about each other all you want, but, over the years, whenever the two of you are in the back of the boat, we’re higher and faster.

**What was the most memorable moment of the weekend?
**CK: We started at the leeward end of the line, and [Dan Shriner’s] Legend, which is a good boat, starts at the weather end. We won the pin, they won the boat. We had a 10-degree right shift, and we both kept going. By the time they finally tacked, we had pinched them off!

CB: Our sails we good, our crew was good, and we just put a new coat of [Pettit] ViViD on the bottom. (I’m a big fan of Vivid, so I’ll be a testimonial for them.) We also had some luck.

CK: You know, Chuck is a good owner. Bottom job, halyards, sails, whatnot—we get it.

CB: The boat was flawlessly prepared, and everything worked. [SW] ran an article about what people do in the offseason (“How the Best Teams Prepare,” June 2011). Our boat was prepared, and we raced a month and a half ago—we came in second at the Annapolis NOOD. We were a month ahead of a lot of the boats around here, especially since we had a late spring.

**So I’ll see you in the Caribbean?
**CB: Oh, we’re coming. You might not invite us back again, but we’re coming!

The Price Is Right, and the Racing Is Tight https://www.sailingworld.com/regatta-series/the-price-is-right-and-the-racing-is-tight/ Sun, 05 Jun 2011 20:06:36 +0000 https://www.sailingworld.com/?p=68398 At the Sperry Top-Sider Detroit NOOD, the most popular class is the least expensive and most inclusive—the Cal 25.

Cal960

Pete Irland has been bringing his Cal 25 Salt N’ Pepper (windward-most boat) to the Detroit NOOD since 1994.

Call them elephants. Call them bathtubs. Call them basketballs with a sticks on top. They may not be the fastest boats competing here at the 2011 Sperry Top-Sider Detroit NOOD, but the Cal 25s are arguably the most competitive. The 17-boat fleet is the event’s largest, and the racing between these built-for-cruising 25-footers is neck and neck all the way around the racecourse.

So what makes these odd little boats so popular in Michigan? It’s simple, explains Rose Alee crewmember Tyson Conway: camaraderie and economics. “In this area, with how depressed the economy has been, it’s nice not to have to dump a ton of money into the boat,” he says. “You can be pretty competitive on a tight budget. Sure, you’ve got to have good sails, but first and foremost, you’ve got to have a good crew and a good skipper to get the job done.

“The camaraderie between the Port Huron fleet and the Detroit fleet is fantastic,” continues Conway, a former commodore of Port Huron YC. “These relationships make the Detroit NOOD a can’t-miss event. As you can see [points to the throng of Cal 25 sailors gathered around a keg on the dock] the social scene is great. Everybody gets along and has a good time, and there’s limited yelling on the racecourse…for the most part!”

Salt ‘N Pepper skipper Pete Irland has been racing Cal 25s for decades, and he’s come to love the boats for their eccentricities. “The boat’s a bathtub,” he says. “You’ve got to steer ’em all the time. They don’t really want to go to weather on their own. In some ways, that’s a negative, but it’s also kept them viable.

“The other thing about the Cal,” continues Irland, “it’s got a flat deck. It makes it easy for people who are more mature to get around. On a lot of boats, the cabin takes up most of the space, and you’re walking through this little narrow space. With the flat deck, it makes it really easy to work in tight situations.”

The Cal 25’s user-friendly deck layout helps keep old goats in the class and allows new sailors to hop aboard at an early age, which makes it the perfect family racer. “There’s a father-son dynamic on a lot of the boats,” says Conway, who got his start in the class crewing for his father and Irland. “Pete [Irland] sails with his son, Kevin. I’m racing with Mark DenUyl, who owns [Rose Alee] with his father and Don Dupuie. You’ve got [Clytie skipper] Dale Marshall, who races with his son, Nathan, you’ve got the Shumakers on Pirogue—I guess that’s what makes the class interesting. The boat that’s winning right now [Paul Nuechterlein’s Never Alone] has a 12-year-old boy aboard. That’s fantastic to see, because that’s what I was a couple of years ago.”

Demon960

Mike Eckstein (driving the black boat) and the crew of Demon Rum exemplify the mix-and-match nature of one-design racing. Tim Wilkes

Yesterday morning, as I was preparing for my appearance on Detroit’s Fox 2 news with reporter Roop Raj (shameless plug, yes, but you better believe I’m going to milk these 15 minutes for all they’re worth), I gave the inquiring landlubber a quick rundown on our sport and what makes the Sperry Top-Sider NOOD Regattas so much fun. I explained to him what a regatta was in the first place, what we mean by the term “one-design,” and that, yes, we come back to the dock every night. Despite my explanations, Raj still seemed puzzled. He gave me this quizzical look as if to say, “Um, okay, so what’s the point?”

With 30 seconds before the studio anchor cut to us live at Bayview YC—they were finishing up a segment on deposed mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, and after our bit would move on to a piece about the death of Dr. Death himself, Jack Kevorkian—I scrambled to convey to Raj the essence of our sport. “What’s cool about sailboat racing,” I told him, “is that just about anyone can compete on a high level—young, old, big, small, boy, girl. With so many different types of boats, there’s one to fit every sailor. And what’s great about the NOOD regattas is that they accommodate the full range of sailors.”

When the camera rolled, I said something much stupider. But when I got out on the water aboard Mike and Beth Eckstein’s Tartan Ten Demon Rum, I realized that what I told Raj wasn’t a total line of B.S. The Demon Rum crew exemplifies the mix-and-match nature of our sport. Since I raced with the team at last year’s Detroit NOOD, Demon Rum has won the 2010 Tartan Ten North American Championship and finished first in the T-10 division at 2011 Sperry Top-Sider Charleston Race Week. The Ecksteins are veteran racers competing at the top of their class.

On the other end of the spectrum is our pitman, Jason Berger, who stepped aboard a sailboat for the first time yesterday morning. Berger was a quick study. He handled tasks like adjusting the topping lift and gathering in the spinnaker with aplomb, and he didn’t complain when somebody elbowed him in the nose, repeatedly, during a confused leeward-mark rounding.

Joining regular foredeck crew Sarah Conger was her brother, Steve, a J/24 sailor taking his first ride on a T-10. I haven’t done much T-10 sailing, either. We were a mix of skilled and unskilled laborers, but we pushed Demon Rum around the racecourse without any major boathandling errors. The pitfalls in our 8-5-7-3 scoreline had more to do with sup-par starts and hit-and-miss strategy, but that’s not the point. The point is that a team consisting of a husband and wife, a brother and sister, a rookie, and a semi-useless media crewmember (me), was able to work together in harmony and keep pace with the fleet’s other 11 teams, most of which share a similarly diverse composition. In what other sport does that happen? Also, in what other sport do the girls pee in buckets and the boys pee off the stern and nobody bats an eyelash? I imagine the close-quarters urination to be the aspect of our sport my new pal Roop would find most bizarre, but unfortanately he couldn’t stick around for the actual racing. Dr. Death was waiting.

The Sperry Top-Sider NOOD series rolls into Detroit’s Bayview YC this weekend. The fifth stop on the tour promised to be a blast on and off the water. Here are a few classes to watch when racing begins Friday morning.

S2 7.9 Steeve Beeler and Tom Vigrass of Frequent Flyer aren’t the only travelers in this fleet of road warriors. Like the Port Huron-based Flyer program, Roger Gamache’s Matros and John Spierling’s REBEL teams have already competed at NOOD events in St. Petersburg, Fla., and Annapolis, Md., this year. So far, Beeler and Vigrass hold the series lead, having taken first-place in the Sunshine State and second-place in Naptown, but Gamache and company have been close on their heels every step of the way. Check out our video spotlight on the S2 7.9 class at the 2011 Sperry Top-Sider St. Petersburg NOOD.

Cal 25 The 17-boat Cal 25 class will be the regatta’s largest, and there’s sure to be a hard-fought battle to fill the void left by last year’s champions, Stuart Thompson and the crew of Obsured By Clouds, who won three of seven races. Look for Bayview YC’s John Shumaker (Pirogue) or Crescent Sail YC’s Paul Nuechterlein (Never Alone) to make a run for the money.

**T-10 **Of the 12 boats competing in the Tartan Ten class, several teams have the experience to take home the pickle dish. Mike and Beth Eckstein’s Demon Rum team is an obvious pick, coming off its victory at the 2010 T-10 North American Championship, which took place at Bayview YC. Doug Scheibner and the crew of Friendship are returning to defend their victory at last year’s event, but I’ve got a feeling Britsar‘s Ken Schram, who filled in for Scheibner at the 2010 NOOD Championship in the British Virgin Islands, will be doing his best to land another Caribbean vacation. And don’t count out the gang on Kim and Gary Disbrow’s Think Blue—this veteran team from Vermillion, Ohio, is no stranger to the peculiarities of Lake St. Clair.

Got news from your class? Drop us a line in the comments below, or email us.
